DOMENICHINI REMINDS US OF THE BIRTH OF THE TROPHY

“THE TROPHY IN MEMORY OF ANDREA MARGUTTI HAS ALWAYS BEEN COVETED BY ALL THE DRIVERS”.

Castelletto di Branduzzo (Pavia - Italy), 20th March 2010. As usual, this year too Oddino Domenichini – renowned FIK Chairman from 1987 to 2000 - is at the Andrea Margutti Trophy which is taking place in Castelletto di Branduzzo.

He was at the head of the Federation when the fatal accident of Andrea Margutti occurred; this is the reason why he is a convinced and determined supporter of the event.

We asked him to tell us something about his personal memories of Andrea Margutti and the meaning of this year’s trophy, which has arrived to its 21st edition.

“I have always done my best to support the organisation of this race in memory of Andrea Margutti – says Domenichini - . In those days I was the Chairman of the Italian Karting Federation (FIK) and I was one of the first promoter of this event. Andrea Margutti was a young and talented driver. He raced in the Cadet category and he was already well known for his undisputable skills and his speed. After the tragedy, which occurred in Parma on 14th October 1989, the Marguttis wanted to create an event in his memory; of course I, as FIK Chairman, I did everything I could to make their dream come true. At the beginning of 1990, the venue for the Andrea Margutti Trophy was the Pista d’Oro (Golden Track) of Rome, Andrea’s birthplace. But after a couple of years, given the ever growing importance of the race also at international level, the race moved on the track of Parma owned by the Pellegrini family. It is definitely a more appropriate circuit for such an important event. In those years, I managed to make accept the international validity of the Andrea Margutti Trophy by CIK: so the race actually became the opening competition of the international racing season, the race that everyone wanted to win thanks to the presence of all the official constructors and of all the best drivers at world level. It was an event that no-one wanted to miss: winning the race meant – and still means – gaining international fame. After so many years I’m so pleased to see how the Andrea Margutti Trophy is still so successful, and I’m pleased also because after the shutting down of the circuit of Parma, the race has found an appropriate venue in order to continue its tradition and remain a reference point for international karting.”
